Thank you! I’ll listen to this on my drive today! I’m a big fan of Comic Con. One of my best friends Brooks Wachtel is often an invited speaker! He’s an Emmy winning writer. It would be great if you did a podcast with him!

It's going to make a difference. I'm going to have to add that...learn how to be an active salesman :) Thanks.

As I said, I hadn't even considered a Con until last summer. I'm signed up for one in Davenport Iowa in March and turns out there's a Horror Fiesta in Peoria Illinois next fall which I just got my name on! My mom actually used to draw T-shirts and sell them at our famed Thieves' Market. That happens every December in Iowa City and I'm going to try to get on that docket next summer. Please let me know about the Omaha Con--I'm planning on similar this year! Love to meet up!

Oh, and near the end you talked about telling prospective customers about the violence--I've read the first and yeah, it's there but it's not the overriding theme. I think, as Lydia said, you don't want to talk people out of buying your book but in your pitch I think all you'd have to say is it's an adult or mature magic mystery (can't remember your wording for it) and it will cue people in it's not a kid's book.

Definitely! I actually stumbled on the perfect pitch shortly after this pod was recorded. I was at a Book Fair in Des Moines, and started telling people my books were boozy adventures splashed in dark humor and served with a side of magical mayhem. It really worked!

That's awesome! I've got some time yet but I'm going to start working on my pitch. It's a good exercise anyway for even talking to people I run into and they find out I write.

The single biggest difference-maker for me is asking for the sale. The pitch is great, but when they look at the book and finish examining it, saying, "You ready to grab a copy?" has a huge impact.

This was awesome. I've toyed with setting up at Cons. Went to a Monsterfest last year and saw 3 authors there and was playing around with it and then after chatting with you I know I'm outgoing enough to handle this. I'm already signed up for one Con nearby next March and am zeroing in on another. Since I write horror, I'm looking to horror/monster cons and it turns out there are a bunch--who knew?

The gist is, this podcast came at a perfect time and I was taking notes the entire time :) Thanks much for doing this. You may be a newbie, but I'm gonna be a real newbie with a leg up on it!

So glad it helped. I'm really impressed by David and Lydia, and their work. It has helped me to persevere even when I feel like other arms of my marketing are slacking. And perhaps we can find a con that's near both of us and split a table. I know Omaha has a summer con in 2024.
