I saw some of the various posts on the AMMO group. I'll probably keep those thoughts to myself. I did see much back and forth and saw when Steve stepped into it.
I agree with you about basically putting "blinders" on with regard to what others are doing, sales-wise. There are so many different factors. Not the least of which is how challenging it is when we're "not" selling books that have a clear niche. Genre fiction seems to be infinitely easier to brainstorm a marketing plan for than the more mainstream fiction. It's curious to me, and a bit frustrating.
I appreciate this podcast as always. And for the record - I disagree about whoever the idiot is that says negative things about Ashley going back to work. Marriage is a partnership. YOUR partnership with your wife is no one else's business. There are plenty of things folks could say about me leaving my W2 job in 2016. More than HALF our income evaporated immediately. It was (and can still be) fairly challenging. But my relationship with my finances, my husband, and our situation is ours.
I think Ashley made a tremendous sacrifice - and did it for the incredible reason that she believes in you and your writing. And she has to believe that, one day, it won't be necessary. Don't listen to fools, Jody. People who want what you want understand. And those who aren't where you want to be have no business trying to take you down, guilt you, etc. I think your situation works for you guys, and I am nothing but impressed with your arrangement. And with Ashley, frankly. She's your "Randy." And I love her for it.
Screw the naysayers (and yes, I fall into that category more often than I would like to admit). We can't possibly give them all the oxygen in the room. Sometimes, it's just putting our heads down (focused, determined) and do what we do. If everyone always succeeded, then it wouldn't work because it WOULD work for everyone, and that would lesson things for everyone.
Anyway. I've played Legend of Zelda at various times (on Nintendo). Scarlette used to love it. I never got that far. LOL
Hoping for good things for all of us, or continued good things, very soon.
I am working to place the naysayers into the right place in my mind which is: They are operating from the programs they've lived from their whole lives. They never asked the question, "Is this the best way to think, believe, and act?"
Most people assume their thoughts and beliefs are true.
I have lived most of my life believing that too.
Ashley is the best person for me. She has very few demands, is comfortable and happy in a ridiculous variety of environments, can find pleasure in plenty or in lack, and so far as I can tell, she actually likes me.
That said, it's my dream to provide for he millions of dollars, millions of unique experiences, and lavish joys. That would be my heart's desire fulfilled.
Just wrote to them about the December con and the February one. I think cons and monster related events are definitely my bread and butter for the types of books I write. THANKS!
This really is a struggle for all writers, and probably all creatives. Unless you get that moment and that magical home run, you're gonna have to work at it. I agree you have to keep your eye on the prize and not worry the day to day wins and losses because it's about winning the war, not every battle.
And as writers and marketers, you have to be willing to change tactics and pay attention to what works and what doesn't. Good real world words today.
I'm shocked at how effective it is to simply act, think and feel from a place of belief. No single effort I've ever made has had such an immediate and measurable effect. By, the way, you should look up Quad Con. I think it's at quadcon.com. They have events in the quad cities near you and Des Moines too. I've got an email out to see if they have tables for December. If so, I'll be in Des Moines on the 16th and 17th that month. Your books would fit really well there.
It looks like the Des Moines event is closed out--still doesn't mean I'm not gonna try to get there and say hi as well as hang out!
I am looking at a February event by the same bunch--do you have a credit card swipe system at the moment and if you do, do you mind me asking on what you plan to use? I've been to several events and people have small swipe systems. Am doing some research on reliable ones but don't have any experience with them. Yet ;)
I've heard of those and seen them in action. Yes. Doing the research but I think it's time to get in the con/event gig and see how it goes. It's gonna be a step outside that comfort zone again, but carpe-get-your-name-out-there ;)
Yes. I had that magic moment in my teens when I realized writing was what I wanted and I have never looked back. It took years to get anything but it has never dissuaded me from my path.
I went to a Monsterfest last June and there were authors who were vendors and it got me to thinking on that front. I have at least three published books under just my name now (will be 6/7 come December) so I think I could do the vendor thing. We have a Thieves Market in town in December too and I need to check that out for tables too. I'll look at Quadcon--even if I can't get a table it would be great to swing by and meet in person!
Yes. I love it. I'm going to really scale on cons of all kinds. I may fail for a bit, but I'll eventually have a proven method to meet and build relationships with readers who will read my work forever after. I look forward to meeting you if it works out, whether we both have a table or you swing by to visit.
Yes. Like you, I keep trying new things until I can make a combination of it work. I found I'm too late for the Thieves Market here, but I put in an email to the Quad Con too. I'm the outgoing kind of personality that I don't mind chatting with people...

Thanks,!
I’m on the waitlist for December, in Des Moines, so we’ll see.
Square is free. It’s the easy choice. Quick to set up and intuitive.
